As your children grow they are learning how to take care of themselves and others in new ways. One of the skills your child should learn is proper brushing habits. While it may not be easy to help your child get in the habit of brushing twice a day for two minutes, a little creativity now may help to build healthy brushing habits down the road.

Encourage Your Child to Brush with These 7 Tips to Make Brushing Fun.

Develop A Routine: While you may be tempted to let your child skip brushing when your normal schedule is off, or it’s been a long day, do your best to keep your child on track. Sticking to a brushing routine will make it seem like second nature to your child.

Make It Fun: Turn on your child’s favorite music and have a 2-minute dance party while they brush. Consider reading a story to your child for 2 minutes using your best creative voice. Whatever you do, make brushing twice a day fun for your child.

Favorite Character: Who is your child’s favorite character? Children’s shows (like Sesame Street) or books found on www.babble.com/crafts-activities/the-10-best-childrens-books-on-brushing-your-teeth/ offer great ways to teach your child proper brushing habits while having fun.

Reward Your Child: Use stickers and a reward chart to motivate your child. Let him add one every time he brushes. Consider letting him choose a bedtime story and always stay positive with your child’s efforts.

Use Your Imagination: Make up your own 2-minute story. Perhaps your child is the superhero who can brush away the monsters who make cavities.

Take Your Child Shopping: Let your child pick out his own toothbrush and toothpaste (We recommend one with the ADA Seal of Acceptance). Choosing a character toothbrush may make brushing more fun.

Brush Together: Set a good example because your child learns from you. Brush together as a family to instill healthy, long-term brushing habits.
